Farewell, Friend

I want to thank everyone for their words of encouragement and sympathy.

June 25, 1995, my newlywed husband walked in the door of our apartment holding a fluffy little golden furball with a pink bow tied around her neck. "Happy Birthday", he said. :)

Today, on my birthday again, John Urban and I held each other in the vet office and bawled our eyes out as we reminisced 14 years of memories: how she used to stick her head out the car every time we went for a ride, bring the ball to play fetch.....over and over..... and over.... and over again, and how she insisted on sleeping under the crib each time a new baby was born. (I am trying to forget all the times I threatened to send her to live in the country for digging holes in my yard or tracking mudprints on my clean floors. How I wish those words never came out of my mouth.)

We said very tearful good-byes and then we watched Bliss take her last breath.

Thank you for all the encouraging words and personal experiences. It helped me more than you will know. This morning when we woke up we knew beyond a doubt that today was the day. She labored pretty hard to breathe all night, her legs had become paralyzed......and her tail was no longer wagging. :( I'm guessing she had a stroke in the night.

She was a GOOD dog, I mean a really, really wonderful dog. We will never forget the friend she was to our family. We are at peace.

Thinking of you and sending prayers of comfort

Rainbow Bridge
Just this side of Heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an
animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet
goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our
special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of
food, water and sunshine and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and
vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong
again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times
gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small
thing: they each miss someone very special, someone who was left
behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly
stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; his
eager body begins to quiver. Suddenly, he breaks from the group,
flying over the green grass, faster and faster. You have been
spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling
together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses
rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and
you look once more into those trusting eyes, so long gone from your
life, but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together...

Oh Charissa, I'm crying for you... But I'm glad you knew it was time. It's so much harder when you're not sure.

If I cry for something that has died today, it will be for the dog Bliss, and not for Farah Fawcett or Michael Jackson. So good to read something besides Fawcett and Jackson

Aww girl, I'm so sorry. Bliss had a very happy life, even if he did dig a few holes.

I had a Lhasa that was so mean, everyone hated him. LOL. Except me. He bit people, barked, was just very protective. We finally had to put him down when he was 10 years old and it was the hardest thing I ever did.

I watched Marley and Me this past weekend and literally sobbed through the last 1/4 of the movie. It just touches your heart so much more when you have experienced it.

Love to you and Bliss. RIP sweet dog!

So sad for you, as I think about my two fur balls in the other room, what the day will look like when we are there. I have lost many pets over the years, and not one of them were easy. Sorry for your loss, but thinking that you had 14 long and wonderful years with her. What a life for a dog and her owners. Praying the kids are also doing okay today.

Oh goodness--I am crying tears of absolute sadness for you. Don't they just become family? It is soooo hard to say goodbye. We have done it too--I thought my heart was going to be ripped right out of my chest.

Thinking about you and trusting God would heal those places in your heart that are longing, missing and wanting your sweet dog home again.

Oh, Charissa, I'm so, so sorry.  I do think Bliss was the sweetest dog I've ever met.  I'll never forget how tolerant she was of whatever part she needed to play for one of the kids.  She was just happy to be there!  Who can say for sure that you won't see her again?  I hope so.

Oh, my heart skipped a few beats. I am so sorry she is gone. But I am thankful for you that you KNEW it was time. That is a gift in the midst of the sorrow. I'm sorry for your family's sadness.

Sending you big hugs!
Bliss is busy running and playing and so happy that her legs are free from pain and she can bark and jump to her little hearts content!
As sorry as I am for your loss.. I know that Bliss is free from the pain and the choice you made was to ease her suffering - though you suffered with the choice. You did the right thing at the right time.

Huge hugs to you and your family

charissa,

big hugs your way. We recently had to put down the cat I've had since I was 14 years old (who obviously led a long long life!) It is never ever easy, and we too struggled with knowing when it was time. I'm so happy that Bliss had such a long happy life with your family. We are actually thinking of getting a dog again and are very much leaning towards a golden retriever, because of all of the wonderful stories we've heard of goldens like sweet, loyal Bliss. I know she will live on in your hearts.

Love,
