Roosters, Hens and Baby Chicks

Well 25 baby chicks arrived and they are ALL alive and well....not to mention totally CUTE!

How sweet is this??? In case you're wondering it was totally spontaneous and unplanned. I couldn't have gotten him to pose like that for a photo if I tried!

We asked the guy at the farm supply store how we can tell whether our 6 remaining chickens are hens or roosters. The totally UNEXPECTED response we got back was, "If you hold them upside down by their feet, the roosters will flap their wings and the hens will just hang upside down without protest." I think he might have been pulling our leg, but if he was telling us the truth, we have 6 roosters and 1 hen!

"Rooster"

"Hen"

Wow you get to do such fun things. I never get to hold hens or roosters.

I teach a chicken/egg unit each year in my Kindergarten class and never cease to be amazed at the miracle of these little ones arriving. Aren't they absolutely precious? Our's were black this year, but your little yellow chicks are too cute. They don't stay that cute for long, but they are precious when they are first born. I'm so glad the second batch turned out better than the first. I am so sorry!

You have brave children. I am scared of birds!

Wow. Are you planning on eating the birds? Who gets to 'prepare' them? I'd be all over the playing and taking care of them. The flip side of that would make me a vegetarian. I can eat it if I buy it at the grocery but that's it.

Looks like the kids are having a good time.

No, I don't think we'll eat them. We'll just have WAYYYY to many eggs to share.
